Justice Promoter, Dominican Sisters in Committed Collaboration

The Promoter of Justice for the Dominican Sisters in Committed Collaboration (OPSCC) will coordinate efforts in justice, peace and integrity of creation among the five participating congregations—Amityville, Blauvelt, Caldwell, Hope and Sparkill—with a view toward facilitating the capacity of our congregations to speak with a stronger voice on the most critical local, national and international issues of our time.

Responsibilities

  1. Promote and articulate the ideals expressed in the Dominican Sisters in Committed Collaboration Statement and the Dominican Sisters’ Conference (DSC) Mission Statement, especially as they are related to issues of justice, peace and integrity of creation.
  2. Participate in the creation of the North American Dominican Call to Justice; which is generated in collaboration with the International Dominican Commission for Justice and Peace (IDCJP) and the DLC/DSI UN priorities.
  3. Raise awareness of the Call to Justice and its collaborative nature within the larger Dominican Family, and to foster engagement with the North American Dominican Call to Justice and the justice efforts of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious.
  4. Animate and advance the collaborative efforts of the OPSCC
    • Meet regularly with the OPSCC Justice Committee.
    • Facilitate the Corporate Stance Process of the OPSCC.
    • Serve as ex officio member of collaborative groups that relate to justice such as the Earth Council and other committees as i.e. Preachers, Communicators, etc.
    • Establish committees and/or task forces as necessary for the advancement of collaboration in justice efforts.
    • Work to coordinate the work of the congregation justice committees.
    • Communicate regularly with the North American Co-Promoters of Justice, and the DLC/DSI NGO Representative to the UN.
    • Represent the OPSCC on collaborative groups such as ROW, ROAR, STOP, and others that may emerge and communicating the information/action with OPSCC in a timely manner.
  5. Represent the OPSCC to the Dominican Family as needed.
  6. Initiate periodic reports to the Congregations through the OPSCC Communicators in cooperation and coordination with the Promoter of Collaboration.
  7. Provide periodic reports, annual budget, financial reports and a year-end report to the Leadership of the Congregations of the OPSCC in cooperation and coordination with the Promoter of Collaboration.
  8. Create an archival record of the justice efforts of the Congregations of the OPSCC.

Qualifications

The Promoter of Justice will…

  • Possess an understanding of and appreciation for the Dominican Charism.
  • Possess an understanding of and appreciation of change and collaboration.
  • Possess the education and training that support the work of justice, such as experience of direct service with the poor and marginalized and experience and knowledge of how to work for systemic change.
  • Possess strong communication, organizational, administration, technology, and planning skills.
  • Possess the ability to work as a team member, work with groups, share office space, and demonstrate flexibility and initiative.
  • Be familiar with and knowledgeable about Catholic Social Teaching
  • Meet deadlines in a timely manner
  • Be able to represent diverse concerns, not one’s personal agenda

Accountability

The Promoter of Justice will be accountable to the elected Leadership of the five congregations of the OPSCC through a Core Leadership Team made up of one leadership person from each congregation.

OPSCC Support

To facilitate communication with the Promoter of Justice and to assist her in her role, an OPSCC Justice Committee will be formed from the existing Justice Committee, who will assist in the transition of this position. Membership would continue to include a representative from the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic and the DLC/DSI NGO Representative to the United Nations.

The Promoter of Justice will share office space with the Promoter of Collaboration at the motherhouse of the Dominican Sisters of Blauvelt, New York.

The position will be half-time (20 hours per week). The stipend is $27,762 and will be paid in monthly installments. The Justice Promoter will receive four weeks’ vacation, one week retreat, 10 sick days, and 10 holidays.
