Sister Adele guest of honor at St. Thomas Aquinas exhibit

Sparkill Dominican Sister Adele Myers was the guest of honor at a reception in March marking the opening of the St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) Faculty Art Exhibit. Sister Adele was recognized as the founder and first chairperson of the STAC Art Department and for her contributions to the arts at the college and the wider Rockland County Community. Dr. Margaret Fitzpatrick, STAC president, and Dr. John Durney, college provost, both spoke of Sister Adele’s impact on students and faculty alike and her advocacy for the arts in nurturing the human spirit.

Sister Adele gained wide recognition as co-founder and curator of Thorpe Intermedia Gallery, noted for the quality of its exhibits. In praising her work with the gallery, Dr. Carl Rattner, chair of STAC’s Humanities Division, noted that during the 15-year existence of the gallery, its shows were regularly visited and reviewed by art critics from the New York Times. Adele was the first chair of the County Art in Public Places Committee, and she was twice awarded a County Executive Arts Award for Outstanding Visual Artist. She was also the recipient in 2004 of the Dominicans in the Arts (DIA) Fra Angelico Award.
