Mary HughesNEW ORLEANS - August 14, 2009-  Mary Hughes, OP prioress of the Dominican Sisters of Amityville was elected to Presidency of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) at its annual assembly here. Mary will serve a three year term as President-Elect, then President, then Past-President.

In reflection on the election, Mary said, "During the August LCWR Assembly, the membership endorsed a Shared Futures statement of direction for the next five years.   A portion of its prologue reads, “Inspired by the radical call of the Gospel, led by God’s Spirit, and companioned by one another, we embrace our time as holy, our leadership as gift, and our challenges as blessings.”  It will be my privilege to companion, to embrace, and to lead these ecclesial women during this challenging and graced time."

The current president-elect Marlene Weisenbeck, FSPA assumed the office of LCWR president for 2009-2010 and reelected Sister Ellen Dauwer, a Sister of Charity of Saint Elizabeth of Convent Station, New Jersey as conference secretary.
