A passerby calling out, "Good morning, Sister Mary" at Saint Mary Magdalen Dominican Parish in Berkeley, California, may get more than one reply. The Dominican Sisters of Mission San Jose have ministered in the community alongside the Dominican Friars since 1927, at first commuting from Oakland. When the School of the Madeleine was built in 1937, the sisters moved to Berkeley. The convent where they live today was built in 1945.
Sister Mary Brennan, prioress of the community, has lived at St. Mary Magdalen Convent since 1989 and has been executive director of advancement at the School of the Madeleine for the past 10 years. She collaborates with Pastor Father David Farrugia, OP, the school board, finance committee, parent organizations and the building and grounds committee to organize support for the school. With a master's in history from the University of San Francisco and in Counseling from Loyola Marymount, Sister Mary served as a teacher and administrator for 35 years before settling into the ministry of advancement that has been her ministry for the past 23 years.
Sister Dolores Marie Calderwood, OP has lived at Saint Mary Magdalen Convent since 1990. With a master's in history and theology from the University of San Francisco and 36 years of teaching experience at the elementary and secondary level, Sister Dolores Marie has taught college level formation courses to male and female novices in theology, consecrated life, vows and Catholic social teaching. She also volunteers as Eucharistic minister and lector in the parish and helps ESL students with their college studies.
Sister Mary La Salette Fuselier, OP moved to Saint Mary Magdalen in July of 2009. She serves in pastoral care and bereavement ministry with Father Wayne Campbell and the staff at Saint Monica's in Moraga. Sister Mary coordinates the work of parishioners who visit the sick, pray for the deceased and support families who have lost loved ones. Sister Mary also makes regular visits to parishioners in assisted living and total care facilities and those in hospice care.
