‘Take me out to the ballgame’… for charity

A group of Grand Rapids (Michigan) Dominican Sisters and employees recently spent some time at the ballpark, enjoying an exhibition softball game between local priests and media to benefit Catholic Charities West Michigan.

Sisters gather for pre-chapter assembly

More than 100 Caldwell Dominican Sisters and associates met in late June for a two-day pre-chapter assembly. Sisters Eileen Ivory, OP, and Lena Picillo, OP, chaired the event, which was marked by prayerful reflection on the present realities and future discernment for the congregation. As part of the celebration for the Feast of the Sacred Heart, Sister Lena was presented with the Dominican Sisters’ 2014 Peace Award. Read more

Houston Dominicans
Archbishop celebrates anniversary with former teachers

The Dominican Sisters of Houston, Texas, honored The Rev. Joseph Fiorenza (Archbishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Galveston–Houston) on the 60th anniversary of his ordination. The Rev. Joseph celebrated Mass with the sisters, followed by a festive dinner in his honor. He was taught by the Houston Dominicans in elementary and high school at St. Anthony’s in Beaumont, Texas.

Sisters gather for chapter

After a weekend retreat at Santa Sabina Center, the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, California, convened June 16–20 for their Chapter of Affairs, themed “Wisdom Stands at the Door and Waits.” Read more

Dominican historians, scholars meet at McGreal Center

In May, 11 U.S historians and Dominican scholars gathered at the Mary Nona McGreal, OP Center for Dominican Historical Studies at Dominican University in River Forest, Illinois, to plan the writing of “Dominicans on Mission,” the second volume in the series “The Order of Preachers in the United States: A Family History.” Read more

Signs of the Earth’s degradation: Do we care?

I am currently reading a book entitled “Spiritual Ecology: The Cry of the Earth,” a collection of essays edited by Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee. Chief Oren Lyons of the Onondaga Nation reflects on a prophecy of the degradation of Earth. The Onondaga were told that two very important signs would warn them of the extent of this degradation. One would be the acceleration of the winds. The other would be in the way people treated their children. Read article by Sister Margaret Mayce, OP

High Schools Preaching Conference
More than 100 students participate in 16th annual event

A record number of participants—more than 100 students, along with their adult leaders—attended the 16th Annual Dominican High Schools Preaching Conference June 27–July 2 at Siena Heights University and the Adrian Dominican motherhouse campus. Participants represented approximately 30 Dominican and affiliated high schools from across the United States and Puerto Rico. Read more

Dominican nuns announce plans to expand monastery

A recent Catholic News Agency article featured the Dominican Monastery of Our Lady of the Rosary in Summit, New Jersey (“New Jersey Dominicans launch monastery expansion initiative,” July 9). The Dominican nuns have launched a capital campaign to expand their monastery building. The improvements will also make the chapel more accessible to the public. Read CNA article

Dominican sisters across the United States are celebrating anniversaries of profession as vowed women religious this month. After 75 years operating as Caldwell College, the institution is now Caldwell University. Caldwell College was founded by the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Caldwell, New Jersey, in 1939.

Sister Anna Maria Santiago OP, (Grand Rapids), president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems, is seeking visual images of what poverty looks like and how it is being addressed. These images will be used in her presidential address at the society's 2014 meeting Aug. 15–17 in San Francisco.
