Empowering women in Tanzania

Sister Mary Reese has spent 56 years in mission in Tanzania, Sister Rosalie Lacorte, 29 years. The two recently turned over their ministry in Musoma, Tanzania, where they had spent the past 29 years with the local people. President appoints friar to Legal Services board

On Friday, June 25, President Barack Obama announced the appointment of Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, OP, as a member of the board of directors of the Legal Services Corporation. Fr. Pius was recommended to this position by Sen. Mitch McConnell, of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. The Legal Services Corporation, established in 1974, is the nation’s single largest provider of civil legal aid for the poor. READ MORE

New leadership team installed, takes office July 1

A new leadership team for the Sisters of St. Dominic was installed on June 19 and assumes office on July 1. The three sisters will lead the community of 160 sisters and 67 associates for the next four years. President Sister Sharon Simon was reelected for a second four-year term, as was vice president Sister Agnes Johnson. Sister Kathy Slesar, pastoral associate at St. Eugene Parish in Fox Point, will begin a term as vice president. READ MORE

Sinsinawa Dominicans pay tribute to local priests

The Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters held an evening prayer service and dinner at Sinsinawa Mound June 24 to pay tribute to the tri-state area priests during the Year for Priests as declared by Pope Benedict XVI. Many of the sisters have ministered with the priests throughout the dioceses in Iowa and Wisconsin. READ MORE

Grand Rapids Dominicans honor Jubilarians

The Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids will celebrate their 2010 Jubilarians in August. A total of 24 Jubilarians will be honored during Dominican Days in several events that will take place from Aug. 4–8. Six sisters will be celebrating 75 years; two sisters will be celebrating 70 years; four sisters celebrating 60 years, and 12 sisters celebrating 50 years. READ MORE

New cookbook dedicated to Sister Flannan McGuane

If you have ever been a guest at Sinsinawa Mound for a meal, now is your chance to bring home some of the recipes made famous by Sister Flannan McGuane, OP, in the Sinsinawa kitchen and bakery. A new cookbook, “Food for All Seasons,” features more than 400 recipes contributed by Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, lay staff and others. READ MORE

Faith and Film
One Came Home; The Secret in Their Eyes

One Came Home” is a small, independent film that will probably receive little attention and a very limited release. While not a great film, it is a story of grace and redemption that’s worth seeing. This year’s Oscar winner for best foreign language film from Argentina, “The Secret in Their Eyes,” is an intriguing film centered on the investigation of the brutal rape and murder of a young woman in the 1970s.
