Nuns Build 2010 Dominican sisters from Springfield, Adrian, Amityville, Peace and Cabra gathered in New Orleans May 31–June 5 to participate in the second annual St. Bernard Project of New Orleans. Several dozen Catholic sisters and other volunteers helped rebuild houses in the devastated St. Bernard civil parish. READ MORE Dominican Sisters International Rose Marie Riley, OP, a Dominican Sister of Springfield, Illinois, is the newest elected member of the DSI Coordinating Council. Sister Rose is in her second term as prioress of the Springfield Dominicans. In an interview with DSI, she says she is “overjoyed at this opportunity to serve the global Dominican community.” READ MORE Houston Dominicans On Sunday, June 6, 2010, the Dominican Sisters of Houston celebrated the transfer of leadership for their congregation. Archbishop Joseph Fiorenza presided at the Mass. The celebration was continued with a reception at the sisters’ Villa. Approximately 300 guests attended. READ MORE Dominicans and the Church To understand the place of the ordained priest in the Roman Catholic Church requires an understanding of the greater whole of which this priesthood is a part. The Year for Priests has provided us a time to reflect anew upon who and what all the faithful are as Church in our own day and situation, and within this context to consider particularly what the ordained priesthood can mean for the Church at this juncture, shortly before the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council. READ MORE National College Preaching Conference In May, 30 students from Dominican Universities/Colleges or colleges with a Dominican presence gathered at Dominican College in Blauvelt, New York, for the Eighth National “Preaching in Action” Conference. These young people came together to learn about the Dominican charism of preaching and how that charism can be incorporated into their own lives. READ MORE Sister Ann Perpetua I first see Sister Ann Perpetua sitting quietly on the couch, two books of prayer cradled in her lap, a few rays of sun dancing on the rosary that is wrapped around her fingers. She is dressed in a light gray and dusty blue plaid skirt, a deep blue sweater and a gray blazer, her salt-and-pepper hair peaks out from around the edges of her veil. She wears a modified version of the Dominican head gear that was part of the standard habit worn when she first arrived at Marywood in 1927.
