Dominican Sisters of Hope
Hope for Haiti concert

In January, the Dominican Sisters of Hope hosted a benefit concert to raise funds for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The concert featured well-known folk singer and activist Pete Seeger. More than 600 people scrambled for a place to sit either in the main chapel of Mariandale Center or in the Evergreen room, in which the concert was videostreamed live. By the end of the evening, well over $19,000 had been collected through free-will donations. READ MORE

Sisters elect new leaders, set direction for six years

Adrian, Michigan—The Adrian Dominican Sisters, during General Chapter 2010, a 10-day planning and election process, affirmed their vision of 2004 to “Seek Truth, Make Peace, Reverence Life” and enhanced this Vision with four commitments that they will challenge one another to live into for the next six years. In addition, the delegates elected a new Prioress and General Council to lead them for the next six years. READ MORE

Dominican justice promoters urge protection of Christians in Iraq

Members of a U.S. Dominican social justice committee that focuses on Iraq have asked the Catholic Bishops to use their influence in Washington to insist on protection for Iraqi Christians. In addition to the letter to the U.S. Bishops, members of the committee have issued an action alert to the 10,000 members of the Dominican Order in the United States, calling on them to fast, pray, and advocate with U.S. officials for protection of Iraq's minority populations. Dominican Colloquium announces presenters

The 11th Biennial Colloquium of Dominican Colleges and Universities has announced its presenters and sessions. Keynote speakers will be Margaret Ormond, OP, prioress, Dominican Sisters of Peace; and Jim Barnett, OP, Friends of God Dominican Ashram. The Dominican Colloquium offers college faculty members, students and professionals an opportunity to reflect on and discuss their Dominican heritage and current issues in Catholic Dominican higher education. Sister to receive PCM Peace Award

Sister Maria Goretti Beckman will be awarded the Pax Christi of Michigan’s (PCM) 2010 Purple Ribbon for Peace Award at PCM’s 29th Annual Conference on March 27, 2010. The Dominican Sisters ~ Grand Rapids are among the list of co-sponsors for Pax Christi of Michigan. Pax Christi’s Winter 2010 newsletter featured an article on Sister Maria Goretti and her tireless efforts on behalf of peace. READ MORE

Miriam Center presented at UN program

Maryknoll, NY—The Miriam Center for Migrant Women in South Korea was selected as one of the best practices of Social Integration in Action by the UN NGO Committee on Social Development. On February 3, 2010, Maryknoll Sisters Norie Mojado and Patricia Norton presented the project as one of three stories from the grass roots at the Church Center Building, UN Nations Plaza in NYC. Chicago, Illinois, well-known as the windy city and for its downtown area called “The Loop,” served as the site of the February 2-5, 2010 OPCOMNET (OP Communicators’ Network) Annual Conference. What happened there set the stage for what will surely be another progressive year as Dominicans continue to keep people in the loop via the world’s most emerging modern technologies. READ MORE

Anne Lythgoe, OP, former editor of, began her term as president of the Sisters of St Catherine de Ricci in January. The Dominican Leadership Conference has hired Susan Oxley to serve as editor of Susan met with Sister Anne in late February in Philadelphia for an intense six-hour course on DomLife 101. READ MORE
