Prayer Can Take Many Forms
Carletta LaCour, OP
Dominican Sisters, Houston, Texas
PRAY ALWAYS. PRAY ALL WAYS. St. Paul's words are taken to heart by all members of the Dominican Family. In St. Dominic's words, "Pray with the Word of God in one hand and the needs of God's people in the other." In our day, the newspaper or some other form of information about the conditions of God's people will help us keep in mind the needs of others.

While on sabbatical with the Sparkill Dominicans, I was introduced to a form of gentle movement known as T'ai Chi Chih. Even to watch others practice these easy-to-learn moves, one is more relaxed and in a peaceful state of mind. Observing us at practice, a friend suggested we come up with some prayers to accompany the moves. I took the challenge and looked at our Dominican Praise Office Book. Some Psalm verses began to match up with the T'ai Chi Chih moves. Others practicing with me have also contributed their suggestions. Prayer can take many forms. Let us be in union with God wherever we find ourselves, physically or emotionally or spiritually.

Prayer, one of the four pillars of Dominican Life, is basic to a life lived for God in service to the People of God, our neighbors. Using T'ai Chi Chih is a way of praying in all ways and is helpful to meet the challenges of the day. Trying to pray with movement helps me to be more focused and centered. I am so grateful to the ones who suggested that I find some Scripture verses to accompany my T'ai Chi Chih practice.
