The theme of the 2006 CCOP Convocation is

Many Who Heard Were Astounded: Preaching with the Hearers in Mind.

The quote from the Gospel of Mark (6:2) speaks to the primary goal of the convocation: to help preachers appreciate and understand the people assembled before them on any given Sunday in order to preach the Word of God to them more effectively.

On the first full day, preachers from all over the United States will immerse themselves in the multi-faceted aspects of the hearers who come to the Sunday Eucharist -- their joys and struggles, their pain and delight. Preachers will be encouraged to walk in the shoes of their hearers, to be in their skin, figuratively to sit in the pews with them in order to understand more fully what their everyday lives are like. They will explore different ethnic and cultural realities, the different experiences of women and men, the variety of world views experienced by the very young, the middle aged and the elders in the assembly.

Richard Rohr, OFM will develop these diverse realities in-depth in his keynote address. A “panel of hearers” will continue the dialog from different ethnic, gender and age perspectives.

Day Two will move the agenda forward by leading participants through a process of preparing to preach with the hearers in mind. Using the previous day’s input as backdrop, a panel including Gerald Austin, OP (liturgical and systematic theology), Barbara Reid, OP (biblical studies), Richard Stern (homiletics) and Teresita Weind, SNDdeD (pastoral ministry) will engage the group in exegeting the Word, the assembly and the world we live in. Finally participants will have an opportunity to practice what they have learned; beginning to prepare a homily that keeps the hearers in mind.

Richard Rohr will close the convocation with Gospel Proclamation, Preaching and a Commissioning Ritual that will invite participants to “Go forth and preach” using the insights and skills they have gleaned from their days together.
