Lay Dominicans
Austin, Texas community celebrates commitments

The Dominican community of Austin, Texas joyfully came together Nov. 8 to celebrate a bilingual Liturgy of the Eucharist with nine chapter members making commitments as members of Dominican Laity.

At present, there are approximately 50 members from about 15 parishes forming three area communities of Lay Dominicans – two in English, and one Spanish-speaking chapter. There is also a new community in formation in Round Rock.

The following five persons made commitments for three years: Isabel Aneyba, José Cepeda, Ana Grimaldo, J.C. Sanders, and Rebecca Friemel Sanders. Juan José Grimaldo, Margaret Kokernot, Elsa de Ramirez, and Aurelia Reynosa made lifetime commitments. Also pictured: Fr. Ralph Rogawski, OP, Sr. Helen Raycraft, OP, and Sr. Margery Race, OP, who provide spiritual guidance and assistance for these lay groups.

Those making commitments expressed their appreciation of the four pillars of Dominican life in living their lay vocation, and how these pillars “interrelate beautifully, through the work of the Holy Spirit, to bring us and others closer to the love of Christ.”

The members live out their preaching mission in various ways. Some have given neighborhood missions to form small faith communities, while others have accompanied the Dominican Preaching Team in Parish Missions. Many are deeply involved in parish ministries, religious and public education, community organizations, and also in handing on the faith to their children. Austin area Dominicans are a vibrant family living the Holy Preaching together.
